The 4 Key Values of Great Teams: Part 2

The second key ingredient to great teams is love. No, I'm not trying to get you in trouble with HR. I'm not talking about that kind of love.

In the Greek language, there are four different types of love. Agape love is what I'm talking about here.

Agape love means unconditional, selfless love. To be selfless is to not be selfish, to put others before yourself. It's this love that great teams and great companies must have to be successful. Here's why:

1) Employees who put their company's (or team's) interests and goals before their own are completely and entirely bought into what you're doing as an organization. Without buy-in from your employees, you won't achieve as much as you would otherwise.

2) Employees who put their teammates' needs and priorities before their own are more collaborative, and more gets done within the organization. Nobody is sitting around saying, "that's not my job."

3) Employees who love what they do, love their teammates, and love the purpose behind their role... they don't need to be motivated by any outside force. You don't even have to manage this type of employee. They self-manage and help their leaders accomplish things at a higher level than organizations who are forced to prod employees for performance.

4) The last reason why love is the second key ingredient is how essential it is to the third ingredient.

The ingredient, accountability, in Part 3 cannot be successfully implemented in any team or any organization without this foundational ingredient of love.
