Children grow up hearing advice like, "Don't be a follower. Be a leader!" And books are written like, Real Leaders Never Follow. I countered that point in my own book, Great Leaders Always Follow.
In many ways, it's true that leaders don't follow, but in many more ways, great leaders do follow. They follow a lot of things actually. But one thing people don't consider, especially early on in life, is how much following determines our own leadership later on.
Martin Luther King Jr. studied Thoreau in college and followed his philosophical views and changed the sentiment of a nation. Plato followed Socrates and built upon his work. The Apostles followed Jesus and scaled out His teachings to the world.
Every leader was once a follower, and who you follow will almost certainly determine how you lead.
Choose wisely.
